Only Jesus is Worthy
In our Johor's Full Gospel Church, we sang the song with the chorus:
Who else is worthy
Who else is worthy
There is no one only you Jesus.
They sang this chorus for at least 10 times. In the middle of the song, I asked why is it that ONLY Jesus is worthy?
This song was taken from Revelation chapter 5, when God hand out the scroll of judgement. An Angel asked loudly: "Who is worthy to break the seal and open the scroll?"
John (the author of revelation) weep bitterly because no one said they are worthy to open the scroll.
But then Jesus came and took the scroll from the hand of God. And the angels sang:
"Worthy are You to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased for God those from every tribe and tongue and people and nation." (v9)
When I think about this, I realized that none of us is worthy, if we compare ourselves to what Jesus has done. This is why we are not worthy:
1. Jesus was God and immortal, yet He became a mortal man and came down to Earth. Earth is a slum compared to the riches of heaven. He was born into a poor family, and his parents were on the run from Herod who tried to kill him.
Which one of us will live our palace and live in the slum? I can think of Mother Teresa who provide care for the people who have diseases in Kolkata. She was inspired by Jesus who lived among the poor and sick people. However, Jesus gave up more - his divine position. the richness of Heaven and immortality - in order to come down to Earth.
2. Jesus did more than living in a "slum" , but also live with criminals. All men are spiritual criminals because "all have sinned." Yet, He is holy, but was willing to fellowship with sinners.
How many of us will fellowship with criminals and those in prison? Perhaps a few is willing to, but Jesus sacrificed a lot more from us, for He was holy and sinless.
3. Jesus knew He will be crucified, yet He continue to say and do what He needed, and He did not run from the cross.
How many of us will purposely go to a place that we know we will be killed there? Jesus endured the torture of being beaten and being whipped with the Roman flagrum that has small pieces of metal and bones designed to tear into the flesh. He wore the crown of thorns and carried his cross to Calvary, where his hands and legs were nailed to it. He persevered the most painful death of crucifixion for six hours.
Why did he became poor, when He was rich? Why did He mix with sinners, when He was holy? Why did He allow Himself to be killed, when He was immortal? Only for one reason - because He loved the worthless ones, and do not want us to go to hell.
That's why He is the only worthy one, to be praised and worshipped. The song we sang has a verse that says:
Righteous one who shed His blood
You proved to us the Father's love
Jesus Christ be lifted up
Holy Holy
